How To Deal With University Stress

Ever wonder why university is so stressful? Don’t worry – you’re not the only one. Uni is the best of times. But it can also be the worst of times if you don’t know how to cope with university stress. If this sounds like you, it’s time for a change. Make some quick tweaks to your lifestyle, and dealing with anxiety at uni should be a piece of cake.

1.) Manage your time

2.) Reward yourself

3.) Exercise

4.) Talk about it

5.) Don’t take too much on

6.) Get enough sleep (but don’t overdo it)

7.) Eat well

Manage your time

What causes stress in University students? The fear of looming deadlines and exams. Get around this by becoming an expert in time management. Plan your uni life so that you never waste a moment of precious time. Plaster a revision timetable on your wall. Dot any important exam dates on your phone calendar so you always have a reminder close to hand. Give yourself time to relax in between.

If you can ensure you are ahead of all of your assignments, you’ll find that you are much less stressed about University.

Reward yourself

Don’t spend all of your time slaving away in a library. It is vital that you balance your student life with your personal life, so go out there and do things that you find fun. After an hour of study, enjoy a sneaky episode of your favourite show. Remember – every break you take will give your body and mind more time to recharge!

Exercise

A dash of exercise is great for your physical and mental wellbeing. Join a sports club, go for a run, or sign up at a gym. If you want something less intense, a walk or bike ride is a perfect antidote for uni stress.

Talk about it

Don’t suffer in silence. Get in touch with a friend or family member who understands you best. If you find that university is too stressful, your uni should have an advisor who can talk you through your problems.

Don’t take too much on

It can be tempting to say yes to every and any social activity going. But if you ever have feelings of social anxiety at uni, don’t feel bad about giving yourself some precious alone time. Give yourself and your social battery a break.

Get enough sleep (but don’t overdo it)

Staying up late to pull off an all-nighter might seem tempting. But it won’t do wonders for your mental state (or the quality of your work!). Get into the habit of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Kick any pesky distractions – laptop, phone screen, textbooks – to the curb.

Do everything you can to relax yourself before bed. Anything less than 7 hours of sleep just won’t cut it. At the same time, don’t go overboard and wake up around dinner time.

Eat well

Prioritise brain food over junk food. A lot of stress in university students comes down to a poor diet. A cheeky takeaway is hard to resist from time to time, but don’t overdo it. A healthy diet means a healthy mind. You don’t have to be Jamie Oliver, but learning how to cook healthy food is a top tip for a less stressful life.
